The University Tread is traditionally detailed with a full rounded bullnose, a diamond relief pattern and pin striping at the nosing. Intrinsically functional for a safe and comfortable stepping surface and immediately recognizable as an enduring traditional style inspired by the SoHo Cast Iron Historic District.
Self-Supporting and Easy to Install: The University Tread is self-supporting when the ends are bolted to load bearing supports at the stringers and engineered for deflection of less than L/360 for a 300 lb. point load. Treads do not require attachment to risers for support and may be used with or without cast iron risers. The University Tread was designed to compliment the University Riser with glass prism inserts.
Raw Metal Finish: Treads sold with a Raw Metal finish are entirely unfinished as foundry direct sand castings and require surface preparation and coating by others. Treads may require sandblast cleaning prior to coating to condition the surface and remove flash rusting prior to coating.
Domestically Made to Order from 100% Local Recycled Metal: Our cast iron treads and risers are designed, poured and finished at our foundry in Richmond, Virginia, USA using clean electric induction melting of locally sourced scrap iron. All cast iron treads and risers meet ASTM A48 Standard Specification for Gray Iron Castings, Class 30.
